Magic City Books is thrilled to welcome Cherokee author and Tulsa native, Andrea L. Rogers for a free, in-store event to celebrate her new YA novel, The Art Thieves on Thursday October 10 at 7:00 pm.

Andrea L. Rogers is the author of Man Made Monsters winner of the Walter Dean Myers Award, the International Literacy Association Award, the Whippoorwill Award, an American Indian Library Association Youth Literature Honor recipient and an NEA Read Across America Recommended Title. It was named a “Best of the Year” book by Washington Post, Booklist, Publishers Weekly, Horn Book and the New York Public Library.

The Art Thieves is a YA novel set in the year 2052 that conjures our futures in startling life – the ones that we are headed towards, and the ones we can still work towards.

This free event will begin at 7:30 pm in the Lorton Performance Center on the University of Tulsa campus. Steven will be joined in conversation by Magic City Books President and co-founder, Jeff Martin.

The End of Ambition highlights how America’s interests in the region have begun to change and critically examines alternative approaches to US-Middle East policy.

Brenda Maier - Magic City Books

Magic City Books is proud to welcome back to the store local author Brenda Maier in celebration of two new publications. Book three in her Penguin and Panda graphic novel series for young readers as well as her new picture book, The Little Green Swing are both being published in September 2024.

This free event with Brenda celebrating her new books will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday October 5 in the Algonquin Room at Magic City Books, 221 E Archer Street in the Tulsa Arts District.

Brenda Maier is a writer, mother of five, public school teacher, and board member of OAGCT, the Oklahoma chapter of the National Association for Gifted Children. Among her books for young readers are The Little Red Fort and The Little Blue Bridge, both of which have been named to notable reading lists.

Brenda’s Penguin and Panda series are playful and humorous graphic novels about two besties that could not be more different from each other. Each book is composed from multiple short stories and STEM related fun facts. The third book in the series, Winterfest joins Suprise! (book one) and Fun & Games (book two).

At the conclusion of the event, there will be an opportunity to meet Liane Moriarty and get books signed or take a photo with her.

Rebecca Nagle is an award-winning journalist and a citizen of Cherokee Nation. She is the writer and host of the podcast This Land. Her writing on Native representation, federal Indian law, and tribal sovereignty has been featured in numerous national publications.

By the Fire We Carry recounts the generations-long fight for tribal land and sovereignty in eastern Oklahoma. By chronicling both the contemporary legal battle and historic acts of Indigenous resistance, By the Fire We Carry stands as a landmark work of American history. The story it tells exposes both the wrongs that our nation has committed and the Native-led battle for justice that has shaped our country.

Rebecca will be joined by three distinguished guests for the program. James Floyd (Muscogee), former Principal Chief of Muscogee Nation when the McGirt case went to the Supreme Court, Rosemary McCombs Maxey (Muscogee) Muscogee elder, first language speaker and language teacher, and Philip Tinker (Osage) lawyer who worked on the McGirt case.

By the Fire We Carry will be published by Harper on September 10, 2024. Copies will be available for sale starting that day at Magic City Books and will be for sale at the event. The University of Tulsa welcomes author Ted Chiang for the 2024-25 Common Read Lecture.

Chiang will give a brief talk that focuses on the themes of his story “The Truth of Fact, the Truth of Feeling” from his collection Exhalation. Afterward, he will join TU Professor Sean Latham for a conversation about other stories featured in his collection and then open the floor for audience Q&A.
